Almost like two separate people translated it! Books by Katherine Pancol. Shockingly, however, as the publishers acknowledge — in tiny print, on the copyright page There’s Josephine – a specialist in 12th century history and the character I loved the most. I found myself laughing out loud, gasping with surprise, wanting to smack a few of these characters, feeling deeply sympathetic to Josephine and also deeply respecting her even when she The Ultimate Character Driven Novel!
Despite that slight misalignment, I found this book pretty delightful. I bought this book because it was an international best seller and so I figured that it had to be a good read.
Iris – Josephine’s sister – so not who I thought she was, I’m keeping my mouth shut – you’ll figure her out eventually. A review at The Washington Post called the book a “satisfying read.
One anecdote even has Shirley’s son, Gary, having seen the film The Night of the Hunter — a film that would surely traumatize any pre-teen and that still shocks most adults see Simon Callow’s book on it — at age eleven. What I will say instead, is that there are about a hundred characters in this book. Iris is married to a successful lawyer with whom she has a son, but she is really doing nothing.

A crocodile farm and the sisters’ book are already more than enough to deal with, but that’s just the starting point for Pancol. She studied literature and initially became a French and Latin teacher before turning to journalism.
