In the whole book we are given just one more line about how when she comes to terms with his worry about her there is nothing that they can say to each other. Although they were written over a year timespan, between andthe characters only age by a few years in the course of the series.
At the time that she needs him David appears to have deserted her; their former regular correspondence having died.
The longer the series goes on, the worse they get. It is obviously not meant to be a bad omen in their case, however. Only towards the end are we given a hint both of his admiration for her and the difficulty he has in expressing it. So much happens in this book that it is difficult to trace all the ingredients that have been blended together in its pages.
The twins, who love Peter deeply, also notice how much she seems to have changed. But I grew ma,colm on them, lonf love to re-read every so often.
