It basically becomes clear from a series of interviews, despite their evasiveness, that the international business wrold new they were dealing with a nepotistic mass murderer.
He takes an outside look at what each of their administrations did and says, ‘not so great no matter which side you are on’ and that is refreshing after years of listening to tons of ‘intellectuals’ fully supporting either the Dems or Reps according to what view they think the parties have and not questioning what their representatives are actually doing. It is a true must-read because it shows exactly what the title says. In effect the money stolen by the Suharto regime is being paid back by the people who rules benefited from that money.
Perhaps he shares it. Sadly this one wasn’t fantastically well rulrrs and it damages the message but regardless is one that deserves your time even if it is heart crushingly sobering. It makes you think how deep the propaganda professed by the west runs, and makes you question the premises you base your beliefs upon. Oil and Gas are the most important thing america want from other world other than strategic power all over the world.
His revelation of the costs the Indonesians pay for the IMF “bail-out loan” – illustrated by the suffering of sweatshop workers who supply the fashion stores of London’s Oxford Street – is brilliant. Picked mostly for the title, this book is simply too sad and horrific in it’s truth to be very enjoyable. There is nothing more to be said about this book than that it is full of details and truth and John Pilger is without doubt, one of the most insightful journalists of our time. But it is a johh which diminishes Pilger’s claim to sainthood.
